Dr Julian Liew is a highly qualified, Australian-trained Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon certified by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

After completing his medical degree at Monash University in 2002, Julian quickly developed a passion for plastic surgery. After a foundation in General Surgery, Julian completed his Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training in 2015 after working at several major Plastic Surgery Units including Austin Health, The Alfred, Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Victorian Plastic Surgery Unit.

Julian’s subspecialty interest is in Microsurgery and Breast Reconstruction Surgery. In order to further his expertise, Julian completed a 12-month fellowship in these specialty areas at the world-renowned Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, United Kingdom.

Julian is enthusiastic about teaching and training future plastic surgeons through his public hospital appointments at Austin Health and Northern Health. Julian’s private practice is based at St Vincent’s Private East Melbourne.

We understand you may have initial questions regarding your procedure. Let us try to answer some now.

A qualified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon is fully accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. The difference between a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon is significant. Anyone with a medical degree can call themselves a “cosmetic surgeon” and are not accredited to operate in major private hospitals.

A qualified Plastic Surgeon will guide you through your patient journey from beginning to end. A Plastic Surgeon will see you at your first consultation, and personally guide you through your post-surgical course. At The Clinic, we feel that a close relationship with your surgeon ensures a smooth and satisfying experience.

The Clinic aims to see all referrals within 2 weeks. For more urgent referrals, your general practitioner can contact us directly and you will be seen within 1 week. If you are wishing to time your appointments or surgery around certain events or dates, please mention this at the time of your appointment to the reception and we will work hard to tailor your surgical journey around your lifestyle and commitments.

A medical referral is not required to make an appointment. However, having a referral allows you to claim a small rebate from Medicare at your initial consultation. All non-cosmetic patients are encouraged to have a GP referral at initial consultation, as this will allow you to receive a rebate on the day of your appointment.

Your initial consultation will be with your Plastic Surgeon. They will listen to your concerns and expectations, take your medical history and examine you. Clinical photographs will also be taken during this appointment. Your surgeon will outline the various surgical and non-surgical options suitable for you and tailor a management plan specifically for you. They will also inform you of the potential risks and complications of a procedure, and you will have time to have all of your questions answered. If surgery is required, you will also receive a quotation outlining expected costs.

Julian operates at St Vincent’s Private Hospital East Melbourne and at Epworth Hospital Richmond.

At the time of your consultation, you will be given a detailed quote for your procedure that will include the surgeon’s fee, anaesthetist’s fee and the hospital’s fees. If your procedure has a Medicare item number, you will usually receive a rebate from your private health insurance. Please consult your health insurance provider to ensure that you have adequate coverage for your procedure. Most cosmetic procedures are not covered by Medicare and as a result you are unlikely to receive a rebate or subsidy for these procedures.
