Breast Augmentation Surgery can either increase your breast size or restore breast volume lost over time

If you feel that your breasts are too small, uneven or not your desired shape, you can be a candidate for breast augmentation surgery. You are a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery if your  breasts never developed, if your breasts shrank from weight loss or pregnancy or if you just desire a larger breast size.  You must also be physically healthy, a non-smoker and maintain a healthy weight. Once it has been determined what can be achieved with your breast surgery goals, and your questions and concerns have been addressed, Dr Liew will carefully and thoroughly prepare a surgical plan that is unique for you.

 Benefits of Breast Augmentation Surgery

Other benefits of breast augmentation surgery include:

– Enlargement of small breasts

– Improvement of the fullness and projection of your breasts

– Improvement of your cleavage

– Correction of breast asymmetry

– Improved balance and proportion of your figure

Aims of Breast Augmentation Surgery

The aims of your breast augmentation surgery are individualised to your own specific requirements.  These aims will revolve around your desired size and shape after surgery.  As a result of Dr Liew’s skill and experience in breast reconstruction, he will discuss with you the best implant, surgical approach and technique that will give you your best result.

Safety in Breast Augmentation Surgery

Dr Liew uses the highest quality Silicone Cohesive Gel Breast Implants that have a proven safety profile.  Dr Liew uses the same implants for both cosmetic breast augmentation and breast reconstruction after breast cancer.

The “14 Point Plan” is a strategy that has been designed to minimise the amount of bacteria that can contaminate breast implants at the time of surgery.  Bacterial contamination of breast implants at the time of surgery has been shown to cause capsular contracture (hardening, pain and deformity of the breast implant).  Dr Liew is an advocate of the “14 Point Plan” and uses research and evidence to improve patient safety.

Australian Breast Device Registry (ABDR)

Dr Liew also contributes to the Australian Breast Device Registry (ABDR), which is a Commonwealth Government Initiative that monitors the safety of breast devices and records their impact on the health and wellbeing of patients.  Participation in the ABDR safeguards the health and well-being of people undergoing breast implant surgery.

Limitations in Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation does not correct drooping breasts.  Though breast augmentation can correct some minor problems, if breast drooping is your major concern, then you should also consider a Breast Lift (Mastopexy), which can be performed with or without breast implants.

Your Clinic Plastic Surgery Journey

During your initial appointment, Dr Liew will comprehensively ask your medical and surgical history as well as perform a physical examination to determine your suitability for breast augmentation surgery.  Your height and weight will also be recorded by our expert staff.  Once this is completed, Dr Liew will discuss the benefits and risks of breast augmentation surgery with the aid of before and after photos.  He will also discuss the type of breast augmentation surgery that will provide you with your best result.  You will have the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have about your surgery, and the costs of the surgery will be discussed in great detail with you by one of our expert team.

If you choose to proceed with your operation with Dr Liew, a second appointment will be made to discuss any further questions you may have.  Clinical photographs will be taken, followed by one of our team measuring you for your complimentary post-operative garments.  You should never proceed with any surgery unless you feel perfectly comfortable with your surgeon and their clinical team.

What Breast Augmentation Surgery Involves

Breast augmentation surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic and usually takes approximately 1-1.5 hours.  This procedure is usually performed as a day procedure in an accredited private hospital.  All dressings used will be waterproof, and you will be able to shower normally after the operation.  Usually no drains are used in this procedure.

What Precautions Do I Have To Take Post-Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Post-surgery, you should refrain from heavy lifting for 6 weeks.  You can drive when moving freely and not taking any sedating medications, this is usually at 1-2 weeks after your surgery.  You will also be required to wear your post-operative bra for 6 weeks.

Breast implants are not designed to last your lifetime, and Dr Liew is dedicated to your safety and health.  You will be invited to have an annual breast implant check to monitor for any changes and ensure your safety.

Dr Julian Liew is a highly qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and his specialty interest is in Breast Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.  He prides himself in his ability to be able to explain complex surgical issues in simple, easy to understand language and wants you to feel comfortable in your decision to undergo any surgery that you are considering.

FAQ’s

We understand you may have initial questions regarding your procedure. Let us try to answer some now.

ARE SILICONE IMPLANTS SAFE?

All breast implants used at The Clinic Plastic Surgery are approved in Australian under the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and in the United States under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The implants that are used at The Clinic Plastic Surgery are all tried and tested technologies with years of data to attest their safety.

HOW LONG DO BREAST IMPLANTS LAST?

The life of breast implants varies from person to person and cannot be predicted.  All patients with breast implants will require additional surgery at some stage.  It is recommended by breast implant companies that you should have your breast implants changed every 10-15 years.

All patients at The Clinic Plastic Surgery enter our Breast Implant Health Check Program.  This consists of regular clinical assessments supplemented by clinical imaging to monitor the health and integrity of your breast implants.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION?

You are suitable for breast augmentation surgery if your  breasts never developed, if your breasts shrank from weight loss or pregnancy or if you just desire a larger breast size.  You should also be physically healthy, a non-smoker and maintain a healthy weight.

CAN BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY CORRECT DROOPING BREASTS?

Though breast augmentation can correct some minor issues, it is generally not regarded as a procedure that corrects drooping breasts.  If breast drooping is your major concern, then you should also consider a breast lift (mastopexy) which can be performed with or without implants.

ARE MY BREAST IMPLANTS INCLUDED ON THE AUSTRALIAN REGISTER OF THERAPEUTIC GOODS?

All breast implants used by Dr Liew have been approved for supply in Australia.  Dr Liew does not use any implants that have been suspended from inclusion on the register as this usually means that there are concerns regarding the safety and performance of that particular implant.  Implant technology has progressed so that there is no reason to not use an implant on the register.

WHAT IS THE AUSTRALIAN BREAST DEVICE REGISTRY?

The Australian Breast Device Registry (ABDR) is a registry for implantable breast devices.  It is a Commonwealth Government health initiative that records information on surgeries involving breast implants.  It tracks the outcome and quality of all breast device surgery performed across Australia.

Dr Liew is an active participant  in the ABDR as it is an important and powerful tool that reports on the long term performance of breast implants with the aim of improving patient safety and identifying best surgical practice.

WHAT IS BREAST IMPLANT ASSOCIATED CANCER?

Breast implant associated cancer is also known as breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).  This is a rare cancer of the immune system.  It is not breast cancer.  It is a rare cancer that grows in the fluid and scar tissue around a breast implant.

In your consultation, Dr Liew will discuss in detail the issues surrounding this rare cancer and what to look for to detect it.  He will also discuss your ongoing Breast Implant Health Check Program that will take place at The Clinic Plastic Surgery.  If you have any concerns regarding your breast implants, please contact the expert team at The Clinic Plastic Surgery.

DO I NEED TO REPLACE A RUPTURED SILICONE GEL IMPLANT?

A ruptured silicone implant can lead to small granulomas or small masses in the breast.  These small granulomas can spread throughout the breast and to other parts of your body through your lymph nodes.

Removal and replacement of the ruptured implant is not a surgical emergency.  However, in general, it should be performed within several months of diagnosis.  The longer the rupture implant is left, the more scar tissue is created by your body’s interaction with the ruptured implant.  This procedure involves removing the ruptured implant and surrounding capsule around the implant.

CAN MY NIPPLE SENSATION CHANGE AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY

It is not uncommon to have some sensory changes after breast augmentation.  In general, sensation usually returns, however it can take 3-6 months to recover.

WHEN CAN I EXERCISE AGAIN?

After surgery you are able to walk straight away, but you should refrain from exercise for several weeks.  You should avoid any heavy lifting (more than 5kgs) for at least 6 weeks.

Your enhanced recovery program will be tailored specifically to your individual surgery and requirements and will be detailed by Dr Liew at your appointment.

WHEN CAN I DRIVE A CAR?

You can usually drive 2-3 weeks after your surgery.  The requirements for driving are that you are moving freely and not taking any sedative medications.  This will be detailed more specifically at your consultation with Dr Liew.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUALIFIED PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGEON AND A COSMETIC SURGEON?

A qualified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon is fully accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

The difference between a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon is significant.  Anyone with a medical degree can call themselves a “cosmetic surgeon” and are not accredited to operate in major private hospitals.  A Cosmetic Surgeon is not recognised as a Specialist Surgeon or Specialist Plastic Surgeon by any of the regulating authorities such as Medicare Australia or the Medical Board of Australia.  They also cannot register themselves as a Surgeon with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Specialist Plastic Surgeons normally undergo extensive training in aesthetic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, paediatric plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery following trauma, burns or cancer treatment.  After completing the mandatory years of training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, many Specialist Plastic Surgeons undertake a fellowship to continue to gain further experience and training in specific branches of the specialty.

IS A REFERRAL REQUIRED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

As of 1st July 2023, new AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) guidelines require all patients obtain a referral from a General Practitioner or a Medical Specialist before scheduling a consultation with a Plastic Surgeon.

HOW MUCH WILL SURGERY COST AND WILL IT BE COVERED BY MEDICARE?

At the time of your consultation, you will be given a detailed quotation for your procedure that will include the surgeon’s fee, anaesthetist’s fee, surgical assistant fees and the hospital’s fees.

Please consult your health insurance provider to ensure that you have adequate coverage for your procedure.

Most cosmetic procedures are not covered by Medicare and as a result you are unlikely to receive a rebate or subsidy for these procedures.

A Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon is fully accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and is registered as a Specialist Plastic Surgeon by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Only Specialist Plastic Surgeons are accredited by the Commonwealth Government of Australia through the Australian Medical Council to perform all reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.
