Breast reduction surgery is one of the most transformative procedures we perform at The Clinic.
Many patients come to me with questions about whether this surgery is right for them—and when the right time might be. In this article, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to help you make an informed decision.
What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, involves removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to create a breast size that is better suited to your body.
There are three main goals of the procedure:
Reshape the breast for improved contour, upper pole fullness, and proportion.
Relieve physical symptoms such as neck, shoulder, and back pain.
Elevate the nipple to a higher, more youthful position.
Signs That You May Benefit from Breast Reduction
Excessively large breasts can impact both your physical health and emotional well-being. Some common signs that may indicate a breast reduction is appropriate include:
- Chronic neck, back, or shoulder pain
- Difficulty with posture or physical activity
- Skin irritation under the breast folds
- Bra strap indentations
- Challenges finding well-fitting bras or clothing
- Emotional discomfort or low self-confidence
If any of these issues sound familiar, breast reduction may offer significant relief and quality-of-life improvements.
What Is the Right Age for Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction is usually recommended once breast development is complete—typically around age 18. However, if a younger person is experiencing severe physical or emotional discomfort, we may consider the procedure earlier, on a case-by-case basis.

What Does Recovery Involve?
Recovery after breast reduction varies by individual, but here’s a general guide to what you can expect:
Scarring: You will have a scar, but we’ll support you through the scar management process for the best result possible
Hospital Stay: Typically one night
Dressings: Waterproof, so you can shower straight away
Mobility: Walking is encouraged from the start
Return to Work/Light Activity: Usually within 1–2 weeks
Driving: Often after 2 weeks, once you’re off sedating medications
Exercise: Avoid heavy lifting or vigorous activity for about 4 weeks
Garments: You’ll receive two post-operative support garments
Are There Risks Involved?
As with any surgery, breast reduction carries risks. During your consultation, I’ll take the time to go through all potential complications, how they relate to your individual circumstances, and the strategies I use to minimise them. You’ll also be shown before-and-after photos and given a detailed, personalised surgical plan.
Am I a Good Candidate?
You may be a good candidate for breast reduction if:
You’re experiencing physical or emotional discomfort due to breast size
You are in good general health
You are a non-smoker
You have realistic expectations
Considering Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery can significantly improve your comfort, confidence, and ability to enjoy everyday life. If you’re considering this procedure, I’d be happy to help guide you through your options with care and clarity.
